After traveling the Caribbean for ten years, you would think I’d be able to choose a destination easily, but the truth is, each island speaks to me in different ways, making it all the more difficult. So trust me, I 100% get where you’re coming from when trying to decide between Turks and Caicos vs Jamaica.

Luckily, after exploring the ins and outs of both islands, I have a little bit of a head start, and I’m pumped to share with you these different comparisons so that you can choose the right destination for whatever fits your travel style best.

And the best part! There really isn’t a wrong answer. Both Turks and Jamaica are dream destinations that you won’t regret visiting. It just depends what YOU are looking for! So let’s dive in, shall we?

If you’re anything like me, then the ultimate goal is to visit both Caribbean islands, BUT which one should you head to first?! This will all come down to what you want out of your holiday.

While they both offer gorgeous turquoise waters and the island vibes we all crave, there are some key differences that I’ll break down to make your decision easier.

Typically, travelers who are looking to live a luxurious life and have a more relaxing vacation tend to favor Turks and Caicos. And if you crave vacations with adventure and a lot of things to do, then Jamaica might be the best Caribbean island to visit next.

Jamaica vs Turks and Caicos: Which is better?

To help decide which island is better for you, let’s look a little deeper into the islands and what they bring to the table.

Jamaica feels as if it is a more lively and colorful island. Between the reggae music, jerk chicken, and friendly locals, there’s always something happening. The natural beauty of Jamaica is also a highlight, with lush rainforests and stunning waterfalls waiting to be explored. This also makes it more humid, so I’d suggest staying away in the late summer months like July and August.

Turks and Caicos boasts some of the most incredible beaches in the world. The crystal-clear waters off of Grace Bay Beach and beyond are perfect for snorkeling and diving, allowing you to get up close and personal with marine life—I’m talking loads of turtles and iguanas. And if relaxation is what you’re after, there’s no better place to unwind than on one of Turks and Caicos’ pristine beaches.

I know they both sound dreamy, and they are. I mean, if this is the worst decision we have to make today, then life is pretty good! No doubt whichever one you choose you’re going to have a great time. But let’s dive into the details to see which island comes out on top.

Turks and Caicos vs Jamaica: Which island is safer?

Turks and Caicos Islands are the safer islands out of the group.

Jamaica has one of the highest crime rates in the Caribbean, along with Trinidad and Tobago. But don’t let this scare you. Most of the crime in Jamaica happens within local communities – which is unfortunate, but true. So, at the very least, I recommend avoiding Kingston at night and maybe leaving your diamonds at home.

Turks and Caicos has a lower crime rate compared to Jamaica but is still at a level 2 travel advisory from the US State Department. Most crime in Turks and Caicos occurs in Providenciales, the largest island and main city in the archipelago. It’s also safe to drink the water in Turks and Caicos.

Personally, I’ve never felt in danger at either of these islands (especially Turks and Caicos) and the only scam I’ve been a part of was a man carving my name into a necklace in a market in Jamaica, therefore forcing me to buy it. Ugh! Seems silly after the fact, but just wasn’t on guard.

Which is easier to get to?

Both islands are some of the easiest islands in the Caribbean to get to. Jamaica (yes, Jamaica is in the Caribbean) has two international airports that are constantly busy. The Montego Bay airport is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean.

Most major cities in the US and Europe have direct flights into Jamaica, making this an easy destination.

Turks and Caicos also has an international airport, and you can fly directly from most major cities in the US. However, if you’re flying over from anywhere else, you’ll likely have to connect in London at Heathrow before making the longer journey. But it’s still a really easy island to reach. 

Which is larger?

Jamaica is much bigger than Turks and Caicos, with an area of 4,244 square miles compared to Turks and Caicos’ 238 square miles. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean.

A main difference between these two islands is that Turks and Caicos is made up of 40 small islands and cays, while Jamaica is one large island. Jamaica is more similar to Hawaii, with its green forests and mountaineous terrain.

Because of the sheer difference in size, Jamaica has many more activities to offer, making it more of a tourist hub and a little more developed in that department.

Which island is cheaper?

One of the biggest differences between these two islands is the prices. Jamaica is known for being a more budget-friendly destination in the Caribbean (this doesn’t mean cheap). But you’ll be able to find affordable flights and even quite a few deals on Jamaican resorts.

Turks and Caicos, on the other hand, is known for its luxury resorts and high-end restaurants – one of the more expensive islands in the Caribbean, right up there with Grand Cayamn and Aruba. A vacation to Turks and Caicos has the potential to cost you much more than a trip to Jamaica. 

Which island has better beaches?

We all know the Caribbean is full of some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world – from Palm and Eagle Beach Aruba to the beaches of St John and St Thomas USVI. It’s why I love it so much. But not many can compare with the absolutely breathtaking waters of Turks and Caicos. I’m talking postcard-worthy beaches just about everywhere you look. 

Turks is home to Grace Bay Beach, which has been ranked as one of the best beaches in the world for years. It’s one of the main reasons people travel to the islands. If gorgeous clear blue waters are what you’re after, then the beaches Turks and Caicos offer are the best option. 

Now, this doesn’t mean Jamaica is lacking gorgeous beaches. From one end to the other of the island, you’ll find clear waters and sandy shores.

The Seven Mile Beach in Negril is one of my favorites, and with a coastline this big, it’s easier to find little hidden coves for those who like to explore and have their own space. < this is a pro tip if you want a Jamaica budget trip with the seclusion that Turks and Caicos offers.

Which Island is better for families?

If you’re traveling with your family, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos have plenty to offer. However, if you have small kids who need to be entertained from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to sleep, then I highly recommend Jamaica.

Because the island is so much bigger and touristy, it comes with a lot more activities and has more than just lounging on the beaches. Jamaica has loads of family-friendly resorts and fun activities like swimming with dolphins, Pirates Island waterpark in Ocho Rios, and the famous Dunn’s River Falls.

And if your kids are on the more mature side and are too cool for family activities (Don’t worry, moms, we were all like that at one point), then a vacation in Turks and Caicos could be right up their alley. Don’t worry – there are plenty of family-friendly resorts in Turks and Caicos as well.

With the freedom to take a paddle board out or snorkel off the coast, the whole family will get the relaxation they’re desperate for!

Which island is better for couples and honeymoons?

Turks and Caicos is one of my favorite romantic Caribbean islands. It’s perfect for couples looking to spend some one-on-one time together. If your idea of a romantic getaway is lazy days on the beach, private charters, couples massages, and some 5-star food as you take in the sounds of the ocean, then you’re going to love Turks and Caicos. 

But if you’re a couple that likes to enjoy exhilarating activities together, then Jamaica is a great option. Less romantic, in my opinion, but with so many things to do, it’s a great way to connect with your partner in a new and exciting way.

Comparing the cuisine

My bias might come out on this topic, but I can’t help it. Jamaica has some of the best food in the world, with influences from so many different cultures it really is like an explosion in your mouth.

You really don’t know what you’re missing until you have flame-grilled jerk chicken from a Jamaican local. It’s life-changing! 

You’ll be leaving the airport with a suitcase full of jerk sauce and spices. Trust me, I’ve done it multiple times.

Don’t worry though, Turks and Caicos also have delicious food, it just leans more toward seafood dishes like conch fritters, ceviche, and grilled fish. These are all incredible, I’m just more of a chicken gal than a seafood gal. It’s exactly what you would expect to eat on a Caribbean island.

Who has a better nightlife?

As the home of reggae, I think Jamaica also takes the cake on the best nightlife. I don’t know if it’s all the rum punches, but not many clubs can make me dance like Jamaican clubs.

You can expect the music to be bumpin’ for hours, whether you want to spend the evening on the beach around a fire or dance the night away at a reggae club, like the Kingston Dub Club. Either way, trust me, you’ll have a good time. (The late-night snacks, like beef patties, are the perfect cure for a rowdy night out.)

If you appreciate a quieter atmosphere but still want to enjoy some nightlife, Turks and Caicos has a smaller nightlife but a nightlife nonetheless. In the towns, you’ll find some live music bars, and a few open-air beach bars (Jack’s Shack Beach Bar & Grill in Cockburn Town is one of my favorites) that stay open for locals and tourists to enjoy late-night beers and cocktails.

• Visit Cockburn Town, the historic capital of Turks and Caicos. (On Thursdays, they have a city-wide fish fry, and it’s delicious.)
