Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii Which is Better in 2024
Trying to decide between Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii? You’re in the right place!
I’ve been to both Turks and Caicos and Hawaii, and I know how hard it can be to decide where to go on your next vacation. Both places are incredibly beautiful, with stunning beaches, crystal-clear water, and lush vegetation. But there are some key differences between the two that you’ll want to consider before making a decision.
Ultimately, the best place for you will depend on your personal preferences. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation with stunning scenery, Turks and Caicos is a great option. If you’re looking for a more active vacation with plenty to do, Hawaii is a better choice.
Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii Which is Better?
What sets these two luxury islands apart? It’s not easy deciding between Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii. Overall, if you’re traveling with your family or seeking adventure, Hawaii is the clear choice.
With its volcanic terrain, Hawaii offers a plethora of outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, and zip-lining. For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture and enjoy unique experiences, Hawaii also has the added bonus of offering traditional luaus and Hawaiian cultural events.

On the other hand, Turks and Caicos is a perfect fit for couples looking for a romantic retreat. Its palm-lined beaches, award-winning Grace Bay Beach, and all-inclusive resorts set the perfect stage for a luxurious, laid-back vacation.
The snorkeling and diving here are top-notch with some of the world’s most famous barrier reefs to explore (hint: Grand Turks 7000-foot coral reef diving wall), boat charters, high-end dinners, and more. So, which one will you choose? Let’s dive a little deeper into these two islands.

Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean Sea. It consists of 40 islands and cays, of which only eight are inhabited. The capital is Cockburn Town, located on Grand Turk Island. The official language is English, and the currency is the US dollar.
Hawaii is a state of the United States located in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of eight main islands, as well as several smaller islands and atolls. The capital is Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu. The official language is English, and the currency is the US dollar.
Which Island is Safer?
When it comes to choosing a vacation destination, safety is undoubtedly a top priority. When it comes to choosing a vacation destination, safety is undoubtedly a top priority.
While Hawaii and Turks and Caicos are both beautiful and safe islands, I’d have to say Hawaii has a slight edge in terms of safety. With one of the lowest crime rates in America, Hawaii is a great option when it comes to finding a safe vacation spot.

That’s not to say Turks and Caicos isn’t safe – it’s one of the safest islands in the Caribbean – but there has been an increase in crime, particularly in the main city, Providenciales. Because of this, the US State Departement has labeled Turks as a Level 2 Travel Destination – Exercise Increased Caution.
Remember that no destination is completely free of crime. To lower the risks, travelers should be mindful of their surroundings and keep valuables close in busy areas. Ultimately, both Hawaii and Providenciales offer incredible experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii: Who has Better Beaches?
When it comes to the ultimate beach destination, Turks and Caicos is a clear winner compared to Hawaii. As someone who has explored a multitude of Caribbean beaches including the famous Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos – and many beaches in O’ahu and Maui – I can confidently say that Turks has unparalleled stretches of beaches comparable to Aruba and St John USVI.

Plus, unlike Hawaii’s winter trade winds – usually October to February – that interfere with swimming for non-surfers, Turks offers incredibly tranquil and warm waters in the winter.
While Hawaii boasts a unique display of beaches infused with volcanic activity resulting in black, red, and even pink sand, I have to admit that, having spent days on the Maui and Oahu beaches (including the North Shore), I still prefer the Caribbean beaches over Hawaii.
But for those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime view, Hawaii’s colorful beaches might just win your heart, if that’s what you’re looking for, over the Caribbean sands.

Which is Easier to Get to?
Turks and Caicos has easy 3 hour direct flights from New York and Atlanta – though this is mostly convenient for East Coasters. Additionally, the flights are EXPENSIVE! But if you’re coming from the east coast, or don’t mind connecting in New York or ATL, Turks is super easy to get to.
On the other hand, Hawaii offers nonstop flights from LA, Denver, San Francisco, and New York. Unfortunately, if you’re trying to get to Hawaii from the East Coast, you’re in for an 11-18 hour day. Flights from the west coast are 5-6 hours but tend to be a little cheaper than those flights to Turks and Caicos.
Overall, West coasters will have an easier time to getting to Hawaii and East Coasters will have an easier (but more expensive) ride to Turks and Caicos.
Do You Need a Passport to Get to Hawaii?
Nope! Hawaii is a US State, meaning US citizens can travel to Hawaii just as they would travel from New York to Maryland. Traveling to Hawaii is considered traveling domestically.
This can make it easy if you don’t have a passport or want to stay within the United States.
Do You Need a Passport to Get to Turks and Caicos?
Yes, US citizens will need a passport to visit Turks and Caicos. Turks and Caicos is NOT a US overseas territory, so you’ll need your passport to enter and exit the country. Just make sure to check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from departure to avoid any issues during your travels!
If you’d rather stay within the United States, but still prefer the Caribbean vs Hawaii, you can explore the US Virgin Islands like St Thomas and Puerto Rico without a passport.
Which is Cheaper Hawaii or Turks and Caicos?
While neither Hawaii nor Turks and Caicos are considered budget vacations, Hawaii is definitely the cheaper vacation of the two. Turks and Caicos is known for its all-inclusive luxury resorts and villas. It’s one of the most expensive vacation destinations in the Caribbean, along with Grand Cayman.

On the other hand, Hawaii has more options when it comes to different budget ranges, giving travelers more flexibility with their expenses.
Plus, flights to Hawaii are cheaper than flights to Turks and Caicos, even from the east coast. So, if you’re looking for a great vacation spot that won’t break the bank, Hawaii is the place to go.
Which Island is More Commercialized?
When it comes to Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii, it’s safe to say that Hawaii is much more commercialized. Oahu has been a thriving commercialized city for years, while the commercialization on other islands continues to grow and spread.
Vacation destinations are never one size fits all – some prefer the hustle and bustle of commercialized cities, while others look for a more localized and authentic experience.

But, for those who prefer a that authentic experience, Turks and Caicos may be the better option. Although there are large resorts, for the most part, it is pretty localized – you won’t find any fast-food restaurants in sight!
In fact, a now-closed Outback Steakhouse 5 years ago was one of the few forms of commercialization that didn’t seem to work out! This island is perfect for travelers who are looking for a truly peaceful and authentic vacation.
And to top it off, Hawaii is more crowded than Turks and Caicos. Hawaii is larger, cheaper, and generally more popular than the small Caribbean island.
Which Island Has a Better Nightlife
Hawaii, especially Oahu, offers a wider variety of nightlife options compared to Turks and Caicos. Honolulu is a bustling city with plenty of locals and tourists, as well as a plethora of bars, restaurants, and clubs to choose from.
The island may be more crowded, but that only adds to the energy and excitement of the nightlife scene.

Meanwhile, Turks and Caicos has a strip of clubs and live music events scattered throughout the week – you’ll find most of this in Providenciales. So, overall the atmosphere is more mellow and relaxed.
I’ve spent long nights out at the bars in Oahu whereas in Turks I generally spend my days relaxing on the beach. If you’re looking for a livelier nightlife experience, Hawaii is the way to go. Though it’s nothing like real party destinations like Cancun and Aruba.
Turks and Caicos vs Hawaii: Island Hopping
Island hopping is a fantastic way to explore Turks and Caicos and Hawaii, and it’s easy to do so with hopper planes, which are easily accessible from both islands.
In Turks and Caicos, add Grand Turk to your itinerary for some fantastic diving and snorkeling opportunities. The other islands offer secluded beaches, perfect for escaping the main island.

Hawaii’s other islands are also worth checking out, with unique remote beaches and some incredible hikes to explore. It’s an excellent way to escape the crowds of Honolulu and see a different side of Hawaii.
Best Times to Go to Hawaii vs Turks and Caicos
The best time to go to Turks and Caicos is during the winter, whereas the peak summer months, like July and August, bring high humidity and the possibility of tropical storms.
On the other hand, while many people think the best time to go to Hawaii is in the winter (I know we all love to escape the snow!), the best time to go to Hawaii is actually the summer!
The tradewinds in the summer in Haewaii are much calmer, making the island less windy and warmer. Summer is the perfect time to go swimming in the ocean, lay at the beach, and hike the mountains and volcanos – like St Lucia and Jamaica.
Hawaii does have the same hurricane season as the Caribbean – June to November – so I always recommend getting travel insurance if you choose to visit during those months.
