Are there Taxis in US Virgin Islands?

There are plenty of taxis operating on the islands. Licensed Taxis are available from the airport in St Thomas, downtown Charlotte Amalie, and various popular beaches. St Croix taxis and St John taxis are also readily available.

On the main roads, you'll also find safari taxis. If you find a local taxi, you can pay as little as a dollar per person to hop on. Double-check to see if it's a tourist safari taxi (which may be more expensive) or a dollar taxi before you get on.

If you have a lot of plans to travel around various places on the island, the taxi fees can add up quickly. This can particularly become an issue if you're traveling with multiple people or a family since taxis on the island charge per person.

    Taxi Rates and Fees

Taxis throughout the island vary between $8-$15/person for a trip.

For father trips, it may cost upwards of $20-$25/person.

Pro Tip: Negotiate taxi fare before you head off on your taxi ride! Sometimes, fares aren't set so it's important to know what they're charging before beginning your ride.

To ensure you're using a licensed taxi, look out for these identifiers:

    • A taxi placard or dome light on the roof and often a placard on the dash + license plates indicating Taxi status.
    • On Duty/Off Duty sign in the window of the vehicle and a sign usually on the fender
    • The driver’s personal identification/taxi license on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Transportation from St Thomas Airport to Your Hotel

There will be plenty of taxis available at the airport. You'll find sedans and vans lined up when you prepare to depart the airport to go to your hotel.

Keep in mind, if you grab a larger van and only have 1-2 people, it will be more costly, so pick the taxi that works best for your group, budget, and luggage.

There are many tour companies that will offer group or private transportation from the airport to your hotel.

Is it hard to drive around US Virgin Islands

While it may take a few tries to adjust to driving on the left side of the road, it is totally possible to get around on your own in the USVI!

Do you need a 4-wheel drive to get around US Virgin Islands

Is there Uber in US Virgin Islands

An SUV or a car with 4-wheel drive can definitely come in handy around the US Virgin Islands. The bumpy roads might make it difficult for smaller cars to get around, but it's certainly possible. Some of the terrains is also very steep, where a bigger car would, again, come in handy.

It's not necessary, but if you plan to do some off-roading or off-the-beaten-path wandering, I'd suggest going for the larger car.

Not sure which US Virgin Island to visit next? ➡️

Is it worth renting a car in USVI

Overall, yes, it is worth renting a car in US Virgin Islands. Regardless of where you're staying, car rentals in USVI give you the flexibility to plan your vacation on your own time, but it also gives you the freedom to travel all over the island PLUS the neighboring islands, St John and St Croix.

The ferry from St Thomas to Cruz Bay is a super convenient way to add even more to your Caribbean vacation! For a small fee, you can bring your car over to St John via ferry and have the freedom to wander around another beautiful island in St Thomas.

⭐I'd suggest reserving a rental car from Expedia before you arrive!

Pro Tip: It's a small island with minimal rentals, so reserve your car ASAP!

How much will renting a car cost in US Virgin Islands?

    St Thomas

Renting a sedan will cost you around $100 per day. A full-size vehicle or 4-wheel drive vehicle will cost between $150-$250 per day.

    St Croix

You can get a rental car in St Croix for as little as $50 per day in St Croix! Gas will also be cheaper in St Croix due to its proximity to an oil facility.

    St John

St John is a much smaller island than St Thomas and St Croix. Rental cars are harder to come by and can range from $100-$300 depending on when you book.

Things to Know When Driving in USVI

They drive on the LEFT SIDE of the road! Don't forget!

You can drive with a United States Driver's License in USVI for 90 days

The roads are narrow and steep, be cautious taking turns and venturing to off-path areas. If you plan to off-road, definitely consider a 4-wheel vehicle

Because of the narrow roads, the speed limit is very slow in the islands.

Mileage: most rental cars come with unlimited mileage. Make sure yours does too so you're not limited to traveling around one island or staying nearby. You have too much exploring to do to worry about car mileage!

Gas prices on an island will always be pricier. The cheapest gas you'll find will be on St Croix, but still be prepared to pay more than you're used to.

Other Options to Get Around US Virgin Islands

    Public Transportation

The VITRAN is the US Virgin Island's bus system. It operates on all three islands and is quite affordable, starting at just $1 for seniors and students.

There are a few bus stations around, but they run very infrequently, so you'll be on the buses schedule and have to make sure the stations are near where you're looking to go.

Overall, the bus system might be useful and affordable to get to a few places, but I don't think it's the best option for seeing all the adventures the US Virgin Islands has to offer.

    Taxis

Taxis are readily available around the island, especially in the busier parts like airports, Charlotte Amalie, and Christiansted.

Taxis in USVI charge per person. If you're traveling with a large group, or with more than 2 people, it might not be worth paying for taxis to get around.

Taxis are a great way to interact with locals - some drivers will double as tour guides so make sure to be respectful and ask questions!

    Open Air Safari Busses

Safari Busses run along the main roads in US Virgin Islands. They are also extremely affordable! Frequently referred to as "Dollar Safari Busses", you can get to many main spots on the island for just a dollar, or $2 if you're going far.

Not all Safari Busses operate as dollar busses, so ask before you get on. Also, check with the driver to see how close to your destination they can get you. You'll likely have a short walk since the buses don't travel off the main roads.

    Ferries

Ferries don't usually travel throughout the islands, but they will get you to the other islands. Ferries travel between St Croix, St John, St Thomas, and the British Virgin Islands.

They're often very affordable and a great way to see as much of the US Virgin Islands as possible! You can also bring your rental car onto the ferry for easy transportation access when you get to the other islands!

    Hopper Planes

St Thomas and St Croix are farther away; so many people opt to travel between them by Hopper Plane. The flight time is approximately 25 minutes and hopper planes travel to and from each island frequently.

This will be more costly than the 90-minute ferry ride, but if you prefer a quick flight to a boat, this is a great option for you.

You can also take a plane to other nearby islands like St Kitts, Puerto Rico, and British Virgin Islands.
