Some travelers think these islands are some of the safest vacation spots in the Caribbean— they have low crime rates and few natural disasters.

Avoid walking in isolated areas at night is still a good idea. Listen to the locals when getting into the ocean. They’ll know if it’s not a good idea to swim. Most beaches will also have flags or a sign system to warn you of dangerous rip tide conditions. Listen to them!!!! 🚩

The heat in both of these islands could also be considered a danger, so make sure to drink plenty of water. 

Which is easier to get to?

Aruba is much easier to get to than St Kitts if you’re coming from the United States.

If you’re flying to Aruba from America, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and most of South America, you don’t need a visa. 

From the United States, you can get a direct flight from New York, Washington, and other major airports to Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA).

On the flip side, American is one of the only airlines that has a daily flight to St Kitts, even from larger airports like NYC and Miami.

Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) is the main airport for St Kitts and its sister island, Nevis.  Luckily, St Kitts has a visa-free agreement with 156 countries! Check out the complete list here.

Aruba is 20 miles long and 6 miles across (at its widest point). The island has a relatively low elevation. 

The highest point is Mount Jamanota, which hits 620 feet above sea level.

St Kitts, by comparison, is 23 miles long and 5 miles wide (at its widest point). The mountains on St Kitts are definitely more prominent!

The highest point is Mount Liamuiga, which clocks in at 3,792 feet above sea level. That means St Kitts is technically larger since it has more surface area to explore!

St. Kitts wins when it comes to being more wallet-friendly! Remember when I said St. Kitts isn’t a major tourist destination yet?

That means you don’t have to pay tourist prices, which is a win. On average, Aruba costs 27% more than St. Kitts.

Honestly, though, when looking at a one or two-week trip to these islands, the difference comes out to a couple hundred dollars less on St. Kitts. 

If you have your heart set on Aruba, you won’t be spending that much more than you would somewhere else. The costs of traveling to the Caribbean are simply higher than traveling through the states regardless of where you decide to go.

Which island has better beaches? 

Aruba is the clear winner when it comes to beaches. With soft white sand and gloriously clear water, you’ll feel like you walked into a postcard.

Eagle Beach has been lauded for its perfection— it was rated one of the best beaches by TripAdvisor travelers in 2021. Palm Beach is lively and vibrant, with lots of people swarming in from the nearby high-rise beach resorts.

Baby Beach is perfect if you want calm, shallow waters (as you’ve probably guessed, it’s a family-friendly spot). Arashi and Malmok are fan favorites for snorkeling and spotting sea turtles.

There are beaches on every corner of this arid island. Snorkel or surf – there’s a spot for any water activity.  

That’s not to say there aren’t lovely beaches on St. Kitts— but if your main goal is a beach vacation, Aruba is the island for you!

While both islands have family-friendly activities, St. Kitts wins in this category. It’s got plenty of beaches to enjoy, and the fun continues beyond the water.

There are many historical landmarks to explore and plenty of other activities scattered throughout the island. 

Check out the Brimstone Hill Fortress, the scenic train, go ziplining, hike to the top of Mount Liamuiga, and explore black sand beaches for a novel experience— for you and the kids!

While Aruba has plenty of water activities for you and your kids, hanging out on the water may get old after a day or two. The biggest family activity in Aruba will be jeep tours. I’d recommend Jeep tours vs ATV tours as ATV tours can be more dangerous, especially with younger children.

Otherwise, you’ll find more shopping, sightseeing, museums, and luxury accommodations, gearing it more towards couples vs honeymoons.

Which island is better for couples and honeymoons?

Aruba and Saint Kitts are fantastic destinations for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. Depending on what you’re looking for, of course!

A St. Kitts honeymoon has stunning natural attractions, Caribbean culture, and the option for luxurious amenities. 

Spend your days hiking in the mountains, exploring the island’s heritage, or enjoying the beach; there’s plenty to do.

With a quiet atmosphere and fewer crowds than Aruba, this is the perfect option for couples who want to spend their honeymoon sequestered away together. 

You might have to do more digging to find the perfect hotel (since there aren’t big name-brand chains on the island), but you’ll be rewarded with a unique and secluded stay. 

On the other hand, Aruba is great because there are so many options! Whether you want a lavish high-rise experience at Bucuti and Tara Beach Resort or a more unique boutique hotel like Wonders, there are plenty to choose from. 

Plus, the food in Aruba is fantastic (more on that in a moment), and the weather is excellent all year. There are some really unique romantic restaurants in Aruba, like Passions on the Beach and Elements.

Comparing the cuisine

Aruba wins (hands down!) on the delicious cuisine. You’ll dine your way through history. 

Enjoy offerings that speak to the influences of Holland, South America, and the rest of the Caribbean. 

Plus, with diverse and high-quality options (including Italian and fresh seafood), you’re not limited to the same type of meal for the duration of your trip. 

Make sure to try Keshi Lena while on the island! These cheese balls are mouthwateringly good and stuffed with spicy meat, nuts, or fruit. 

Fried plantain and a fried ball of black-eyed peas called Cala should also be on your must-try list (my favorite favorite I’ll be craving them for a while after writing this).

 Since the food in Aruba is so excellent, I wouldn’t recommend getting an all-inclusive. And lots of other Aruba friends agree with me.

Saint Kitts, on the other hand, has a much more traditional Caribbean food scene and a lot of casual food stops. You’ll find plenty of meat, seafood, and spicy dishes like jerk chicken. 

Who has a better nightlife?

Aruba wins again! Considered some of the best nightlife in the Caribbean, you’ll find seaside bars, exciting casinos, beachfront lounges, and even comedy clubs where you can dance the night away.

Aruba has a diverse party scene. Palm Beach – also known as the resort strip) has many options within walking distance. This is definitely the place to be if you want to get in with the tourist crowd.

Downtown Oranjestad is where the locals go, or you can even rent a party bus! 

Saint Kitts has fewer options— most are located on The Strip. 

Just south of Frigate Bay beach, you’ll find 11 unique bars open all day and night. 

Pro Tip: The Strip is a great spot to watch the sunset. 

Things to Do in Aruba

While you could easily spend an entire week lounging on the gorgeous beaches of Aruba, there are plenty of other things to do on this happy island.

• On most main beaches, you’ll find quaint shacks where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, and more.

• With regular trade winds, Aruba is also a perfect spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing! Whether you’re heading out onto the water or just watching, the mornings are typically the best times to go. 

• If you prioritize nothing else, plan a day visiting the Arikok National Park. It comprises a whopping 20% of the island and has the famous Conchi Natural Pool, caves, cool rock configurations, and breathtaking scenery.
  
• Head off-road for an around-the-island tour, take a romantic sunset sail, or even hop on a food tour if you’re a foodie!

Things to Do in St Kitts

With green rainforests covering a quarter of the island – similar to St Lucia and Hawaii – adventurous travelers should spend time exploring the lush jungle. 

• There are various tours, but if you’re looking for a physical challenge, check out this hike up to the top of Mount Liamuiga.

• If a 6-hour hike doesn’t sound like something you’d want to do on vacation (I don’t blame you), there are other more leisurely options to see the flora and fauna of the island. 

• One is a 3-hour scenic train tour, where you’ll circumvent the entire island.
