I consider safety to be my top priority when traveling to any island, and it can be hard to understand the ins and outs of small towns on small islands. The good news for you – Aruba is generally a safe island.
Of course, there are some areas to be cautious of, as there will be with any destination. Noord Aruba is considered a safe place to enjoy your vacation. Here’s everything you need to know about safety in Noord Aruba so you can stop worrying and start planning!
Is Noord Aruba Safe?
Yes – Noord, Aruba is generally considered safe for tourists.
This island town is a popular destination for tourists with a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere, one of the main draws here is that it has a low crime rate. It’s also rated a Level 1 by the US Department of State.
Local authorities prioritize tourist safety and work closely with the police to maintain a peaceful environment.
Like with any destination, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and practice common safety measures, such as not leaving belongings unattended and locking all hotel and car doors, just like you would in any travel destination or even at home!
Personally, I’ve never felt unsafe in any of the areas in Aruba, and many frequent Aruba travelers agree with me! However, I do practice overwhelming caution when I travel – from not going out alone at night to staying away from empty alleys and areas.

Yes, Noord is also safe at night. Noord means “North” in Dutch. Generally, Noord is simply known as the northern part of the island – this includes Palm Beach.
Palm Beach is not only one of the most popular tourist areas on the island, but it’s also famous for its vibrant and lively atmosphere after dark.
Plenty of restaurants, bars, and casions stay open late which attracts locals and tourists. The high-rise resorts are also located here. They don’t stay open too late, however. While Aruba is considered a “party island” many of the bars and restaurants shut down around midnight.
Street lighting, especially in the main tourist areas is good, providing a sense of safety if you're out in the evening. However, I always stick to these well-lit areas and avoid isolated locations, like anywhere else.
Make sure you have a plan to get home after midnight. While the streets are pretty well-lit, and incredibly walkable during the day, I generally avoid walking home from bars at night. There are plenty of taxis available to get you home safely.
Also keep in mind taxis implement a surcharge - set by the government - after 11pm and on Sundays.
There are also some areas off Noord off the resort strip and farther away from the main shops and restaurants. If that’s the case, you might want to carry a small flashlight in your bag just in case!
Should You Rent a Car in Noord?
If you're planning on staying in Noord for more than a few days, then renting a car can be the best way to explore the area at your own pace.
Overall there is a friendly road culture (it’s called one happy island, after all!), well-designed roundabouts, and most visitors adhere to local traffic laws.
Renting a car is the best way to have the freedom to visit the attractions around the island, like the California Lighthouse and Arikok National Park on your one time.
A few things to consider when it comes to getting around Aruba - having your own transportation is also more convenient if you're after comfort, or traveling with your family or lots of luggage. When it comes to beaches, unless you’re right on Palm Beach, most vacation rentals or houses in Noord won't be directly on the beach; you'll likely have to drive to the beach.
Just be aware that renting a car can be costly, especially during peak travel season. Also, check beforehand if your accommodation has parking lots, finding parking spots in Noord, especially in crowded tourist areas, can also be quite tricky.
I always prefer to rent, but some visitors swear by not renting. To each their own!

Driving in Arikok National Park
Aruba's roads are fairly flat and well-maintained, offering a stress-free driving experience. The only area with rough roads is Arikok National Park.
In some areas of the park, you’ll need a 4-wheel drive vehicle or an ATV/Jeep rental. Jeep tours are readily available throughout the island - and it’s an experience I’d highly recommend!
I also recommend opting for a Jeep rental over an ATV rental, as many citizens living in Aruba advocate stopping ATV tours around the island. They aren’t well-regulated and can be dangerous.
If a visitor isn’t paying attention to where they’re going, they can damage the ground and flora around the national park. Or, you can injure yourself! If you do decide to rent an ATV or UTV, be extra careful and go with a reputable company.
Taxis
Taxis are easily accessible in various locations like the airport, cruise ship terminals, resorts, and restaurants. If a taxi isn't nearby, you can call and order one.
It’s better to take taxis if you're going downtown as parking is harder downtown, also, if you want to drink at the casinos taxis are definitely the way to go.
It's worth noting that In Aruba, taxis don't use meters; instead, fares are based on the destination. These are set by the Aruba Department of Public Traffic. Prices are per taxi, allowing a maximum of five passengers (excluding infants under two). Additional charges apply on Sundays, official holidays, and after 11 p.m.

Noord is renowned for its vacation rentals and shopping plus convenient nightlife near the resort areas in Palm Beach. It's a great choice for those who wish to be in the heart of the island's social scene - I’d highly recommend Noord for first timers visiting Aruba.
On the other hand, Oranjestad, the capital and the largest city of Aruba, offers a more urban experience. This is where regular cruise ships dock, so it will get crowded when ships are at port, espeically from January to April, the worst time to visit when it comes to crowds and peak prices.
Oranjestad has a convenient free trolley to get around. It will take you to the museums, mall, and the Aloe Factory.
For those seeking a relaxing vacation, Noord might be the better choice. Noord is less crowded than Oranjestad, with the exception of Palm Beach area.
Oranjestad, on the other hand, is closer to Eagle Beach Aruba, just south of Palm Beach. Eagle Beach has condos, smaller hotels, and tends to be much quieter than Palm Beach. Being father from Palm Beach, it’s also farther from the popular restaurants and bars.
Deciding between Palm and Eagle Beach is one of the firs t decisions most Aruba travelers make! They’re close to each other, so you can easily enjoy both regardless of your decision.
The vacation rental areas of Noord boast a slower pace of life, allowing you to unwind beneath the palm trees, enjoy tranquil beachside walks, and indulge in laid-back dining experiences.
