While Bonaire is generally safe, it’s always a good idea to be extra cautious and take necessary safety measures to ensure a delightful and stress-free stay. Here are a few of my top tips for making the most of the time in Bonaire!
I’d put Bonaire up there as the safest Caribbean island to visit – along with Grand Cayman and Turks and Caicos (although thankfully, it’s a little cheaper than those two!).

What is the Crime Rate in Bonaire?
Bonaire has a low crime rate, which contributes to the island’s reputation as a safe place to visit. Bonaire’s overall crime rate is roughly 12 incidents per 1,000 people, which is close to the national average for many towns and cities.
While pickpocketing and theft incidents are rare, they do occur on certain occasions, as they do everywhere! You always should be careful in areas like Kralendijk – where lots of people are shopping around, carrying bags and purses and such.
To lessen this risk, keep your valuables secure and pay attention to your surroundings. Also, be careful about scams – they’re happening more often in Bonaire. Only book tours through reputable companies like directly through dive shops or on Viator.

1. Car Safety When Shore Diving
Bonaire is the shore diving capital of the world. This means you’ll probably be driving to different dive sites vs taking a boat out.
So as you head out shore diving, you might be surprised to see rental cars sitting out with the doors unlocked and windows open. Follow suit! This is a pro tip for visiting Bonaire. If not, there’s a higher risk of your rental car getting broken into.
But if you use your common sense and don’t easily believe everything, this can help effectively prevent these kinds of situations.
2. Reef Safe Sunscreen
Sun exposure is always stronger at the beach, so you’ll want to do your best to avoid sunburn. The best way to keep your skin safe and protected is by applying plenty of reef-safe sunscreen – preferably SPF 30 or above. Make sure to reapply frequently as well.
Secondly, Bonaire is very serious about keeping its island and parks clean and protected, so reef-safe sunscreen is a must.
Don’t just pack the cheapest reef-safe sunscreen – some sunscreens are labeled reef-safe or mineral but actually contain some harmful chemicals.

Bonaire experiences a dry season from November to June – this means minimal rainfall and trade winds that provide a nice break from the heat!
The rainy season lasts from October to December, bringing occasional showers and a slightly higher humidity level. Overall, Bonaire’s climate is perfect for outdoor activities, diving, and soaking up the Caribbean sun.
Are There Hurricanes in Bonaire?

However, it’s not easy to get flights in and out – there really aren’t that many!
For example, I was hoping to get a 5 day trip in, but my preferred airline only flies into Bonaire and Saturdays and out on Sundays!
So, I had to spend the whole week in Bonaire to avoid switching airlines and weird connections. Keep that in mind when planning your trip.
