St Lucia or the US Virgin Islands: Where Should You Go Next?
As a general rule, St Lucia is better suited for vacationers who want to explore the culture and outdoor beauty of St Lucia – from tropical rainforests and cuisine to the most famous UNESCO World Heritage site in the Caribbean.
U.S Virgin Islands, on the other hand, are known for their exquisite white sand beaches, untouched National Park, and of course – shopping!
Now, let’s break down everything else you might need to know about visiting these two Caribbean paradises.
USVI vs St Lucia: Key Differences
St Thomas is buzzing with things to do like shopping and nightlife – I never head to St Thomas without leaving plenty of room in my bag for goodies to bring home. Though it’s still mild compared to Aruba or the Bahamas.
While St John boasts stunning beaches and the Virgin Islands National Park, which takes up three-quarters of the island – St John is where I spend my time truly relaxing. It’s quiet and there’s very little tourism on the island outside of Cruz Bay (the main “city” and where the ferry port is located).
St Croix is the largest of the three and home to breathtaking beaches, a vibrant culture, and the Carambola/Annaly Bay tide pools, a must-visit for nature lovers. St Croix has two main cities for you to explore, Christiansted and Frederiksted.
Christiansted is full of restaurants and activities, and Frederiksted is quieter but offers many boutiques and shops to shop through. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, both St Lucia and the US Virgin Islands offer something special.
But, if you’re looking for adventures, I’d recommend heading to St Lucia. My trips to the US Virgin Islands are much more laid back, spending my time with my feet in the soft sand and floating in the clear water.
St Lucia vs US Virgin Islands: Which is Safer?
There are things and places you should avoid in St Lucia and the US Virgin Islands, but both countries are safe for tourists and generally issue-free.
It is important to note that St Lucia and St Croix USVI do have higher crime incidents compared to St Thomas and St John USVI.
St John, in particular, is the safest of the three US Virgin Islands.
In each country, however, I take the same precautions I would in any city. Leave valuables out of sight and never unattended, always lock doors to my hotel rooms and car rentals, and never ever ever hang out alone at night!
This is especially important to remember on the beaches. It might seem like a nice idea to take an evening stroll along the beach, but beaches are secluded, and when dark, pose a risk of danger. And I should also add that I never swim alone – nighttime or daytime!
St Lucia vs US Virgin Islands: Which is Cheaper?
The US Virgin Islands are slightly cheaper than St Lucia. While St Lucia may be a bit more expensive, with Soufriere (one of St Lucia’s main cities) costing almost double the price of St Thomas, St John, and St Croix resorts, the US Virgin Islands offer cheaper accommodation options overall.
Plus, with more areas to visit and stay in USVI, you’ll have plenty of choices to fit your budget.
Flights to St Lucia are also generally more expensive with fewer direct options from the United States.
Neither island is considered “cheap” but you can definitely find ways to make your Caribbean getaway more affordable without sacrificing any of the fun. For example, I tend to plan my Caribbean trips in July-October, vs the “best time” in the winter/spring months. which is the rainy season in St Lucia and the US Virgin Islands.
Another thing to keep in mind is that St Lucia has all-inclusive resorts, more similar to the Bahamas, whereas the US Virgin Islands do not have any official all-inclusive resorts. You’ll find more luxury villas than luxury resorts in St Thomas and St John. It goes without saying that all-inclusive options are much more costly than other resorts and boutique hotels.
Getting to St Lucia vs Getting to USVI
The great news for US citizens is that traveling to USVI doesn’t require a passport, since it’s a territory of the United States. Direct flights from major cities like Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, and Orlando keep costs relatively low, starting at just $300.
St Lucia, however, requires a bit more effort with flights starting at $1000 and going up to $4000 for direct flights from New York, Atlanta, and Miami.
Keep in mind, however, that one flight gets you to St. Lucia and St. Thomas, but St. John and St. Croix require a ferry or hopper flight. Regardless, both destinations offer plenty of sun, sand, and adventure to make it worth the journey
Beaches
When it comes to beaches, the US Virgin Islands sure know how to do it right. The soft, white sands and crystal-clear water make for an award-winning combination that’s hard to beat. On the other hand, St Lucia’s beaches have a unique charm to them.
With many of them located along its mountainous and forest-filled coastline, you can expect rocky shores and smaller beachfronts. While the beaches in St Lucia may not be the best for lounging around, there’s something special about their natural beauty that you just can’t ignore.
Don’t worry though, if you’re just looking for some clear water for swimming and snorkeling, St Lucia still has that.
Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a simple vacation relaxing on the beaches, the US Virgin Islands definitely take the trophy.
Snorkeling
I might be biased, but I’m always SHOCKED at the marine life so close to the beaches in the US Virgin Islands. But, you’ll find great snorkeling in St Lucia has well. In fact, the island has an abundance of amazing snorkeling spots, including Anse Chastanet Beach, which boasts healthy coral reefs and vibrant marine life.
Smugglers Cove is another popular destination that offers stunning marine scenery. For history buffs, Pigeon Island Hole National Park is an incredible spot teeming with schools of fish. Though you might have to take a boat or a land and sea tour to get there, it’s well worth it to experience this historic site’s underwater wonders.
The US Virgin Islands are known for top-notch snorkeling, with double reefs, sea turtles, and schools of fish just a short swim from the shoreline. I don’t go to the Caribbean without packing my own snorkel gear, and USVI is why. Almost every beach you go to you’ll find spectacular snorkeling – particularly Coki Beach, Brewers Bay, and Maho Bay. I almost always spot a sea turtle in Brewers Bay.
Cuisine
