Tide pools are pockets of seawater created when the ocean’s tides push water into naturally formed, rocky enclosures located at the coastline. The tide pools are fairly quiet and secluded; about a 45-minute hike from civilization. 

A few fun facts about tide pools: they are home to various small marine life like sea urchins, crabs, and little tropical fish, that can be found both in the water and on the rocks. They even create mini waterfalls for you to explore.

The tide pools are a natural attraction in St Croix with no official business or contact information. There are, however, a few tour operators that provide transportation to and from the tide pools.

The Annaly Bay tide pools are a beautiful, naturally occurring attraction found on the North shore of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. How are rock pools formed? The tide pools are formed when seawater crashes against the land and becomes trapped in the rocky, “intertidal” areas. 

They are home to small marine life, including sea urchins, small fish, and hermit crabs. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a starfish! The tide pools are an amazing site to visit, where you can cool down in the refreshing waters, and stand beneath the mini-waterfalls cascading off the low cliff faces.

In addition to discovering the tide pools on your own, you have the option to book a tour. Bush Tribe Eco-Adventures offers a guide to accompany you during the hike through the rainforest trail while teaching you about the various wildlife and the area’s rich history.

Tan Tan Tours

No worries if you want to enjoy the tide pools but aren’t up for the hike or aren’t able to do the hike! There are also Jeep tours by Tan Tan Tours to the tide pools. The route taken by these tours is an alternate route to the hiking trail that takes you directly to Annaly Bay Beach. 

Then, all you have to do is climb over the rocks to get to the pools! The tours are conducted by experienced drivers who know all the ups and downs– literally– of the off-roading route and can get you there safely.

Getting to St Croix Annaly Bay Tide Pools Hike on Your Own

Nothing beats experiencing an island’s untouched nature, and the Annaly Bay trail is a hiker’s bliss. Hiking the trail on your own is one of the most exciting adventures you will embark on during your stay in St. Croix. So, how do you do it?

Annaly Bay Tide Pools Directions: Starting Your Trip

Start by heading Northwest of the island, where you will cruise by the Marriott property known as the Carambola Beach Resort. Locate the property’s guardhouse near the entrance, then drive left to the upper parking lot. 

If you are unsure where exactly to go, ask the guard for directions and they can let you know. To the left of the parking lot, you will see a paved road. 

As you walk up this road, the pavement opens up on your left, but continue walking on the right side. A small opening to a dirt road will appear on your right. This is your entrance! Remember, it is very subtle so be sure to pay attention; a short wooden marker will indicate it. 

SHORT CUT TIP: Some travelers opt to take a shortcut on their hike. To do this, you will be starting at a different trailhead that cuts through the Carambola Resort’s water treatment area. Ask a guard for directions to the bridge leading to this alternate trailhead. 

Important: don’t forget to fill your water bottles and bring plenty of snacks to get you through the hike.

You’ve Made it To the Trail! What’s Next?

Once you enter the rainforest, your true journey has begun! This hike can be strenuous, so you must be well-prepared to avoid tiring out or getting injured. Bring enough water and snacks for at least 3 hours roundtrip. 

As an avid hiker myself, my top tip here is to bring MORE than you think you’ll need. This is especially important on hot Caribbean islands! 

The forest is mostly shaded by dense trees and may be humid, so avoid wearing too many layers. A can of bug spray will come in handy but is not necessary. I happen to be a mosquito’s best friend, so I tend to avoid going anywhere in St Croix without my bug spray. 

The trail is in no way extreme but it is challenging in some areas and will get your blood pumping in an exhilarating way. Wear proper hiking shoes so that you don’t lose your balance. 

You’ll walk narrow paths, step over thick roots and large rocks, hike up a few steep inclines, and duck under branches, all while taking in the beautiful plants and flowers along the way. 

There are several clearings in the trees that give way to scenic views of the ocean across the mountain as well as the entire Carambola resort below. 

These are perfect areas to take a breather and capture stunning, Instagram-worthy photos of the landscape or take some selfies with your family/friends. 

Depending on the time and day, you will encounter more or less people on your way, who often pause to let you know how close you are to the figurative finish line and shoot encouraging smiles your way. 

The atmosphere emanates such an incredible sense of connection with others, that which you can only find on these kinds of out-of-the-way excursions. 

Towards the End of the Trail

Towards the end of the trail, you will come to a dirt road with two paths. Turn right and keep walking. 

This road leads finally to Annaly Bay Beach with its pebbly shore and crashing waves. Trek on left over the rocks until you reach the edge of the cliff. 

Now, this next part can be tricky as it involves a short scramble around the cliff. You must cautiously make your way across the jagged, sometimes slippery rocks, holding on to the natural hand and foot holds for support. 

This particular bit is one reason that the tide has to be low when going to the tide pools. Many people ask, are tide pools dangerous? 

Overall, the answer is no. BUT, during high tide, it is very dangerous to traverse the coastline due to rough waves that crash against the cliffs and can knock you over into the water. 

Once you see that the water level is low enough, be mindful and use good judgment when deciding where and when to step. 

Within a few minutes, you will reach your well-earned destination: the tide pools! 

You’ve Made It! What to Expect When You Arrive

The blue-green water against the backdrop of the cliffs is a sight for sore eyes– and feet. There’s little shade here, so put on your reef-safe sunscreen. Wade around in the pools or swim under the surface and spot some fish!

When the ocean’s waves spill over the rocky walls of the tide pools, you can stand under the mini waterfalls they create. This sensation is enough for all the tension in your body to evaporate!

There is another, small but deeper tide pool right past the first one that you can venture into and equally enjoy. 

After spending some time in the tide pools, it is time to pack your things and begin the hike back.

Rental Cars

The most reliable way to get around St. Croix is renting a car. This allows you to have greater independence and time freedom during your trip. Keep in mind that residents drive on the left side of the road in the US Virgin Islands.

It is not recommended that you do any off-roading such as on the path to the tide pools with a rental vehicle. You must be very experienced with off-roading. Only use a vehicle with 4-wheel drive if you decide to attempt this.

Taxis

Taxis are a great way to get around St. Croix without a personal car. They periodically travel to both the east and west ends of the island. 

“Tourist taxis” are usually stationed in popular locations such as the airport, cruise ship docks, downtown Christiansted, and downtown Frederiksted. Drivers charge based on the number of people and the requested destination. 

To locate a taxi, simply look for the taxi placard on the roof and an On Duty/Off Duty sign, usually in the window. 

Drivers are always friendly and helpful so don’t hesitate to communicate and ask questions! They’re locals, after all.

When going to the Annaly Bay tide pools, park outside the entrance of Carambola Beach Resort. Parking within the resort is reserved for guests. 

A guard at the guardhouse can direct you to where exactly you can park.

Where to Stay Near the Annaly Bay Tide Pools

The closest place to stay to the tide pools is the Carambola Beach Resort, which is just a short walk away from the trailhead for the hike.

Aside from that, one of the top locations to stay on St. Croix is Frederiksted, and there are many options from hotels right on the beach to resorts and more here.

The Victoria House is just 30 minutes from the Tide Pools, or The Frederiksted Hotel is about the same distance. Both of these are also great options for where to stay nearby.
