You’ll find a variety of accommodation options in St John, from camping and RVing to villas and resorts. There are a few different neighborhoods, but they each offer incredibly different vacation experiences.

Overall, Cruz Bay will be the most lively area with the most options. You should opt for Cruz Bay if you want a hotel or resort. But if you’re looking for a quieter getaway, Coral Bay might be the spot for you. In Coral Bay, you’ll find private villas, houses, and condos for rent.

With that being said, you can’t go wrong with any spot on the island. It is sure to be an unbeatable paradise no matter where you stay in St John!

Pro tip to remember: this is St John Virgin Islands, NOT St Johns Virgin Islands! There is no “St Johns Virgin Islands”; St John’s is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. Don’t book a hotel in the wrong country!

From downtown beach bars to secluded villas overlooking the US Virgin Islands, there’s something for everyone in St John.

Note: There are only a few hotels in St John, and most of them aren’t budget-friendly! There are no all-inclusive resorts in St John. Resorts and hotels in St. John are luxury and mid-range options.

I have added some budget villas and rentals for travelers looking to save some money! For budget travelers, consider staying in Charlotte Amalie and taking a ferry to St John for the day.

PRO TIP: Renting a car is almost necessary anywhere you stay on St John, unless you plan to stay in Cruz Bay. Even more so, I’d suggest a 4WD vehicle to get up some steep, pesky hills!

Cruz Bay is the center of St. John in more ways than one. When you travel to the island via passenger or car ferry, Cruz Bay’s two ports will welcome you. You’ll quickly uncover the island’s most happening area with beachfront bars and restaurants, cafes for your go-to morning beverage, and to top it off – great shopping.

The town is also a popular gateway to all the best things to do in St. John. Safari taxis depart from in front of the passenger ferry terminal, ready to bring you to the island’s best beaches, hikes, and snorkel spots. 

If you wish to hire a car, you can also do that here. Though, it’s also popular to grab your rental car from St Thomas and bring it on the car ferry over. 

Boat tours and taxis also depart from the bay’s beaches around the island.

Come evening, places like the Beach Bar are great spots to watch the sunset on the water’s edge. The bar even has live music several times each week.

From this hotel, you’re just a short walk from downtown Cruz Bay. Most hotels in Cruz Bay are conveniently located in a walkable area, but not often do you find one with a beach area. This makes Gallows Point a favorite hotel in St John.

The concierge can also help plan excursions and transportation to other nearby beaches.

Coral Bay is on the opposite side of the island, and the opposite sort of town! This small town is home to locals living in St John and tourists. Coral Bay provides the quiet, tranquil, “island time” vibes you might be looking for if the bustle in Cruz Bay isn’t for you.

There aren’t many hotels in Coral Bay, aside from Concordia Eco Resort, but there are some incredible villas and vacation rentals to choose from.

Coral Bay Harbor is a popular spot for fishing and boat charters. It also hosts many travelers and locals living slow life on their sailboats.

There are many local bars and restaurants in Coral Bay, along with some friendly donkeys you might find along the main roads – so drive slowly! Needless to say, Coral Bay is for you if you’re looking to escape for a few days.

About Coral Bay

From one side of the island to the other, Coral Bay is essentially the opposite of Cruz Bay. On the island’s eastern shores, Coral Bay is quaint, remote, charming, and, compared to Cruz Bay, very quiet. For the right travelers, this is the perfect combination.

Offering an intimate experience for your crew, Coral Bay is a place to sit back and admire the scenery. Unlike the evening sunsets of Cruz Bay, your mornings in Coral Bay often begin with a beautiful sunrise. 

From there you can pick between a variety of adventures away from the bustle along the western side. 

Coral Bay has quieter and more unheralded beaches, so it’s not hard to avoid the crowds. 

My favorites include Lamshure Beach and Hansen Bay. It’d suggest renting a car to make the most of your stay. History lovers will also want to stop at the Catherineburg ruins and Annaberg Plantation. 

If you’re a water lover, a fun boat cruise on the Salt Deck or a dinghy rental will help you find hidden alcoves and everyone’s favorite restaurant, the floating taco bar: Limeout.

Coral Bay is best for couples. After traveling from one side of St. John to the other, you’ll find yourself in a quiet, romantic destination as gorgeous as any on the island. 

It’s a place to take things slow and enjoy time together. But with so much to do during the day, you won’t be bored. 

Whether you’re a couple, a solo traveler, or a family, a visit to Coral Bay is one of the best things to do in the USVI. If for no other reason than to experience the cocktails and tacos at Limeout!

Chocolate Hole is laden with mid-range boutique villas and high-end rentals like Coconuts. Guests will be able to enjoy a more residential vibe compared to other parts of St. John. 

There are some great restaurants on Great Cruz Bay, but you’re also a quick drive to downtown Cruz Bay for a day or night out.

St. John is only nine miles long. However, over two-thirds of the beloved Caribbean destination lies under the banner of the Virgin Islands National Park. 

In fact, the park essentially covers any parts of St. John that aren’t Cruz Bay, Coral Bay, and Chocolate Hole.

Devoid of much of the human touch, the Virgin Islands National Park is one of the most pristine in the US and her territories. It’s here you’ll find world-famous beaches like Maho Bay and Trunk Bay, along with local favorites like Caneel Bay. 

The park’s protection expands into the Caribbean Sea, so you can expect some incredible snorkeling in places like one of my favorites – Watermelon Cay – and the well-known underwater trail in Trunk Bay.

Early morning hikes are a great way to kick-start the day before it gets too hot. This part of St. John is where you’ll find the Ram Head Trail and paths to Honeymoon Beach.

Virgin Islands National Park is the reason I recommend and always, myself, rent a car in St John. The accessibility to hikes, beaches, and hidden gems is well worth exploring on your own. 

Who is Virgin Islands National Park best for? 

The big drawback of the Virgin Islands National Park is the lack of accommodation. This should surprise none. 

Those that do exist here tend to be private villas that require top dollar from their guests. Older families traveling together will be able to share the load of these pricey destinations, along with couples looking for a memorable vacation or anniversary.

On the other hand, the park’s Cinnamon Bay Campground is one of the more budget-friendly accomodations in the USVI. 

Adventurous solo travelers can set up a tent or stay in an eco-hut, close to one of St. John’s best beaches.

This is a great option if you don’t want a guided tour, and is also one of the most unique snorkeling experiences you can have! During the swim, you’ll find plaques in the sand – just like a museum – to learn about the marine life you’re swimming with!

You won’t find a shortage of coral and native fish swimming along this path.

The 11-acre Cay is located in the secluded Leinster Bay, surrounded by vegetation and reefs teeming with marine life. There is also an old plane wreck in the cay, providing an additional source of interest for snorkelers.

The best time to visit Henley Cay is between April and November when the water is at its clearest. However, even during the off-season, the snorkeling here is still excellent. So whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, Henley Cay is definitely worth a visit.

Charlotte Amalie is the downtown area in St Thomas and is filled with things to do. You can find shops, restaurants, and lively nightlife around the area. St Thomas also has historic sites, beaches, and tours to fill up a day or two of your trip.

How to Get to St John

There is one way to get to St John: by plane and by ferry. The ferry is the most popular option, as it’s relatively cheap and easy.

There are a number of companies that operate ferries to St John, and the journey takes around 20 minutes from St Thomas and 90 minutes from St Croix.

If you’re flying, you’ll likely fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT), which is located on the neighboring island of St Thomas. From there, you can take a short ferry ride over to St John.

Alternatively, some airlines offer direct flights to Beef Island Airport (EIS), which is located on Tortola. From there, you can take a ferry or a water taxi to St John.

How to Get Around St John

Getting around St John is best done by car. There is a good network of roads on the island, and renting a car is the best way to explore all that St John has to offer. The rental car companies and resorts make it easy to arrange a car pickup when you arrive.

You can also get around by taxi or shuttle bus, although these can be expensive, and hard to come by in the more secluded areas. If you’re staying in one of the major resorts, you may find that there’s no need to leave the property, as everything you need will be on-site.

Keep in mind, if you plan to travel to Coral Bay on the east side of the island, there are no gas stations! So, be sure to fill it up before you leave.

• A Taxi from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay will cost about $9/person.

In Cruz Bay, taxis will be easy to come by, but when you get towards the middle and eastern spots on the island, like Coral Bay, you’ll have a much harder time finding them! You will also come by taxis in the popular Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay beach areas.

Can You Get Around St John without a Car?

If you’re staying in Cruz Bay, you may not need a car, as everything is within walking distance and you’ll find plenty to fill the time. However, if you want to really explore the island, a rental car is still your best option.

The steep hills and narrow roads make walking in St John fairly dangerous. I wouldn’t suggest trying this method to get around.

Best Time to Visit St John

The best time to visit St John is from mid-December to mid-April. This is the island’s high season when temperatures are warm and there is very little rain.

Hurricane season runs from June to November, so keep this in mind when planning your trip.

However, this is also the busiest time of year, so expect higher prices and crowds at beaches and attractions. If you’re looking for a cheaper and quieter vacation, consider visiting during the low season, from May to November.

Temperatures during this time are still pleasant, although there may be more rain than during the high season.
