Where is St John USVI?
St. John, USVI is located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. It is surrounded by several other islands and islets, both within the USVI and in the nearby British Virgin Islands (BVI).
St. John is approximately 4 miles east of St. Thomas, another major island in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). Additionally, it is just under 50 miles from St Croix, the largest of the US Virgin Islands.
The distance between St. John and Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, varies, but it’s roughly about 10-15 miles. The British Virgin Islands are just a quick ferry ride away!

How to Get to St John US Virgin Islands
The most popular way to get to St John is to take your flight into the main airport in St Thomas – Cyril E. King Airport (STT). From the airport, you have two ferry options. These ferries are frequent and reliable, offering an easy and convenient option with fantastic views.
1. Passenger Ferry
- Ferry from the Charlotte Amalie cruise port to Cruz Bay St John (45 minutes)
- Taxi to Red Hook cruise port to Cruz Bay (20 minutes)

2. Car Barge (Car Ferry)
Got a rental car? It can come with you! Rental cars are usually easier to get (and a little cheaper) on St Thomas compared to St John. You can pick your rental car up at the STT airport and then head to the car ferry to make your way to St John!

3. Private Boats + Water Taxi
Chartering a private boat or catamaran is a fantastic way to get to St John, especially if you’re looking to make a day trip out of it. Not only does it give you the flexibility to set your own itinerary and explore the island at your own pace, but it also allows you to avoid the crowds that can sometimes accompany ferry rides.
Most people consider this an option for day trips or to just have a luxurious experience island hopping. But, there are also companies that will taxi you from St Thomas to St John if you want to avoid the ferry altogether.
